Best years are still ahead of you

Don’t let poor hearing get in the way of golden years, happy family times

Seniors in today’s lifestyles lead active lives.

We want to continue to work, value add as we share our knowledge and expertise, continual skills learning and upgrading, being good caregiver to grandchildren and enjoy family times together. Good hearing is a vital part to make these possible, especially with latest advances in hearing aid technology

Modern hearing aid technology and hearing

Phonak Audéo M

Hearing aid technology has improved significantly over the years. The introduction of

rechargeable hearing aids brings ease of use and convenience as users no longer need to worry about changing of battery. With advanced noise cancellation and introduction of Bluetooth technology, users can now stream audio signal from TV and mobile phone to their hearing aids and once again individual can talk to their friends over the phone easily and enjoy their favourite TV program with their family members.

However, in general patients with hearing difficulty still take about 7 to 10 years before they come forward to seek help. Studies from various institutes have shown that older adults with hearing loss are more likely to develop dementia as compared to those with normal hearing. Hearing loss is no longer just about not hearing well, it is also about faster cognitive decline.

The use of hearing aids remains as one of the most effective solution toward hearing loss. Studies had shown that family support and encouragement can significantly motivate the older adults to come forward earlier to see Audiologist for help and improve the success of using hearing aids. Principal Audiologist Mr Tan Boon Hai strongly encourage family members to accompany their parents or grandparents to clinic during the first few consultation with the Audiologist.

Invite the family

Family involvement not only motivate the seniors to take the first step to see an Audiologist but their presence also help them to feel more comfortable and less stressful as there is always someone there to help them to understand what are being discussed during the consultation session and help them to make a well-informed decision.

To hear for the first time that modern digital hearing aid can be rechargeable, link via Bluetooth to your TV/mobile phone, download a mobile app to personalise your hearing aids can be overwhelming for many seniors. With family members attending the clinical sessions together, not only helps the family to have a better understanding as to why a particular hearing aid technology is recommended for the individual but also helps the hearing-impaired senior to learn and build confidence to use the aids successfully. Engaging the family in the creation of the treatment plan will also help build a support network where the patients need it most.

Modern Technology and Seniors

We use many tech buzzwords these days e.g. Bluetooth, wireless. To a younger generation, we look forward to getting a new electronic gadget e.g. latest handphone and will google and look for YouTube videos to help us learn more about it to using it. However, this is completely different for seniors. Many tend to be scared of technology and even turning a remote control on or off can be daunting task.

An experienced Audiologist can ease the concerns, patiently counsel and guide them to learn how to use and manage so they can hear more in a relaxed mood.

Festive Gatherings

Festive gathering exerts additional stress on hearing impaired family members. We like to go out for dinner gatherings which tend to be loud and noisy. As such, you find them sitting alone in a corner as the noise is too much for them to handle.  Good hearing really matters.
