The Sounds We Never Thought We Would Miss – inspired by family sharing

If you have normal hearing, there are hundreds of things you probably never think about.

Someone speaks—you hear straight away.

Your phone rings — you answer.

Your family laughs—you know why.

Someone talks to you while walking beside you—you continue the conversation.

You order food in a busy restaurant without worrying whether you heard the question correctly.

You hear your name from across the room and instinctively turn around.

You watch TV shows without concentrating on every word.

Hearing simply happens.

And perhaps that is one of the greatest joys of normal hearing: You don’t have to think about hearing.

But for someone with hearing loss, these same everyday moments can slowly become work, fatigue, social withdrawal…

Did she say thirteen or thirty dollars?”
“Doorbell, alarm clock rings, you hear it straightaway”
“What did the waiter ask?”
“Why is everyone laughing?”
“Was someone talking to me?”
“Can you say that again?”

Imagine having to solve these puzzles dozens of times every day.

Family members often help without thinking twice.
They repeat.
They raise their voices.
They explain what someone else said.
They answer on behalf of Mum or Dad.
They turn on subtitles.

And because families become so good at helping, sometimes everyone begins to believe:

“They’re still managing.”

But step outside the family and things can be very different.

The cashier may not repeat herself three times.

A colleague may assume you understood.

The neighbour may simply end the conversation.

At a gathering, the conversation moves on before you have worked out what was said.

That is why helping someone with hearing loss goes beyond mean speaking louder for them.

Sometimes the more loving question is:
“How much are you missing when I’m not there to help?”

Hearing care is not simply about making sounds louder.

It is about helping someone regain easier access to conversation, confidence, independence—and all those ordinary moments the rest of us rarely have to think about.

Because one of life’s quiet privileges is not simply being able to hear.

It is being able to listen without having to work so hard.

Hearing is one of life’s quiet joys. It connects us to people, places and moments every single day.

Treasure your hearing.

Take care of it. 👂
