‘I feel left out…’ – what our seniors wish we understand about hearing loss
July 4, 2025
What Our Patients Tell Us:
In our clinics, we hear it all the time:
“I feel left out of conversations.”
“I think they are talking about me behind my back…”
“My grandchildren stop talking to me because they think I don’t understand or reply fast enough.”
“I turn up the TV just to hear a little, but it annoys everyone else.”
“I try so hard to listen but I still cannot hear well. I’m just too tired to try again…”
These are heartfelt expressions of frustration by our loved ones who often chose to suffer silently which you may not be aware of. Please know they are equally frustrated as you are.
As caring Audiologiets, we share this information to help families see hearing loss in its full context—not just as an ear issue, but as a whole person experience that deeply impacts quality of lives; communication, confidence, anxiety and cognition processing.
Small Changes, Big Impact
Slow Down, Speak Up: Helping Our Seniors Feel Heard and Included
Just as we slow our walking pace to match our seniors, we should also adjust our communication pace to help them feel included and supported.
Here are a few simple tips:
• Speak clearly and a little slower—clarity is more important than volume
• face them directly, maintain eye contact—this makes communication more personal and grounded
• Avoid speaking from another room—distance and noise reduce clarity
• Minimise background noise during conversations—especially the TV or fans
• Be patient and present—genuine connection matters more than perfect speech
As our loved ones age, it’s not just their hearing that may fade—it’s also the ability to process and make sense of sounds, especially in busy or noisy settings. In our earlier article, we sheds light on the often-overlooked link between hearing loss and cognitive decline, emphasizing how these dual challenges can deeply affect communication, confidence, and connection. Thankfully, today’s advanced hearing aids—powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) —do more than just amplify sounds. They intelligently identify, reduce background noise and bring much-needed clarity and comfort to conversations. Understanding how these two factors affect one another is crucial not only for those living with hearing difficulties, but also for their loved ones and caregivers.
